In this world we live in, we usually have to work for everything we have. We’re used to earning trust, love, money, friends, forgiveness, etc. It’s in our nature to want/need to earn things.
I think Christ’s death on the cross was going against the grain in that manner. He died and therefore bestowed grace upon us. He earned the grace for us. Our human nature wants to keep trying to earn that grace; our ticket into Heaven. We want to tell people that they need to change themselves in order to be worthy of the grace Christ gave us.
Can’t any of us begin to see that there is no earning of this grace? If we had to work our way into Heaven then there wouldn’t have been a cross. We can’t possibly earn it! It’s impossible!
It makes me sad to see guilt-laden sermons where they continue to tell us we need to change ourselves in one way or another to be a Christian.
I looked Grace up in the dictionary and this is what it says “a.the freely given, unmerited favor and love of God.”
Freely given, unmerited. Does that sound conditional to you? Did you hear somewhere in the Bible where it says “I forgive you but…”?
The direct translation of forgiveness is to permiss or to let be. Yes, permiss. To give permission. Christ died on the cross and by that was saying “I’m doing this all for you, it’s ok you’re a sinner, I’ve taken care of everything for you”.
Because seriously, if we had any ability to work our way in then Christ’s death was in vain…no?
Now most people get frazzled (like I did when I first opened my eyes to this) and think “well now people are just going to go and sin and do whatever they want”. Could be true, doesn’t have to be true. Christ will still love you if you do though
.
God gave us direction for a purpose and it wasn’t to get us our Heaven key. What would God want for us? He created this beautiful earth, he created love and laughter and millions of good feelings. He didn’t give us rules to follow to make us not enjoy our life. If you follow God’s word then you’re going to lead a happy and healthy life. Your relationships will be healthy, your body will be healthy and you wont create as many problems for yourself.
You know how it feels to give you child a new toy and see them really enjoy it? Isn’t it worship when we treat our lives with care and great enjoyment? Don’t you think that’s what God really wants from us? To see us happy? Just how we want to see our own children happy but in an even more pure, honest and wholesome way?
I’ve never felt as free in Christ as I did when I truly began to completely believe in the wholeness of grace. I’m finally at rest.
You’ve beautifully described the foundation of our faith. It’s all of grace from start to finish. We don’t even keep our salvation by our works. You’ve summarized Ephesians 2:8-9
However, II Cor. 5:17 shows us that this salvation by grace empowers us to be a new creation. Eph. 2:10 speaks about a new life of good works. Ephesians 1:4 tells why He chose us and saved us. God is producing saintly character in the lives of believers.
Eph. 4:11-32 speaks about the purpose of saving us byHis grace.
II Timothy 3:16-17 shows what God is doing in our lives as we expose ourselves to the preaching of His Word.
My prayer for you is Paul’s prayer for the church in Eph. 3:14-21
But you’re right. It’s all of God’s grace from start to finish. There will be no one in Heaven strutting over what He has accomplished as a Christian.
God bless you richly!

I agree with a lot of what you said, and quite well put actually, about grace and forgiveness.
I know you hate it when people spout off verses to you to support their position, but I wanted to ask one thing… can you think of an example in the Bible of someone who encountered Christ, had a true moment of conversion, and then continued to be the person they were before and did not change? I believe that true faith inspires change, and not begrudgingly so. We are all sinners, saved by grace, and we all continue to sin even after that grace we are still sinners. But sin should look ugly and gross to us, and we should not accept sin simply because we know we can’t be perfect. We should still strive to be better and better and more like the creation Christ died for everyday. I heard a really great sermon at church last week, where the preacher wanted us to look at the things we did and ask ourselves if we were crucifying him over and over. Like, every choice you make, ask, “Is this what Christ died for?”. It really moved me, and made me rethink the way I make decisions. The Bible says that it “grieves” the Holy Spirit when we sin… and personally, I think Christ went through enough pain and hardship, I want to do everything I can everyday to be better and better so I can grieve the Holy Spirit less and less. I may never be perfect, but I can sure try.

As a pig thoroughly enjoys wallowing in the mud because he has a pig’s nature and as a kitten is miserable when dirty because it has a cat’s nature; so a sinner throughly enjoys sin because he is a sinner and a Christian hates sin because He has a new nature.
We Christians can be extemely sinful when we are not surrendered to the indwelling Holy Spirit.
We can’t judge others as to whether they are Christians because we don’t know their hearts; but we are to judge ourselves to see if we are truly Christians. II Cor. 13:5
We won’t be perfect until we are glorified in Heaven, but we don’t excuse our sins, but rather
confess them as the Holy Spirit convicts us.
I encourage you to go to my church web site and go to HIDDEN TREASURES and from there to FREEDOM. Under that category go to Born Crucified for some light on this topic of how Christians can have victory over sin.
In answer to your question, David, a righteous man after God’s own heart, got about as low as a man can get when he committed adultery with Bathsheba and then had her husband killed. But because he was a righteous man, he had a broken heart over his sin. Ps. 51 is his confession. Note, it was not a light hearted
“Sorry God, I goofed.”
As you said, “It grieves tthe Holy Spirit who lives in us as Chrstians, and because it grieves Him it grieves us. Thank God for the cure for sin in
I John 1:6-10.
